6 Conclusion

The most important issues of our time are environmental issues. Every year, scientists worldwide have been urging us to be aware of environmental issues and the consequences of global warming. Humankind has embraced materialism and we have failed to realise, let alone meet, our social and environmental obligations. We have been warned about climate change and the importance of the sustainability for centuries. The only difference is that now, we are knowingly acting irresponsible and it is on a much larger scale. However, there is hope and we can redirect our steps in order to protect this planet.

Awareness and education play a crucial role in sustainable development for the current and future generation. We need to transform the way we live our lives in terms of our behaviours and what we consume. Sustainable development requires a collective and conscious effort from every single individual around the globe.

Singapore aims to transform its cities into sustainable and liveable places. Food, water, energy and shelter are the basic ingredients necessary for humans to live with dignity. New technology and design, mobility efficiency, a new management approach and investing in sustainable education are basic elements of creating sustainable leadership and cities that ensure a sustainable use of the planet’s limited resources. The younger generation need to be aware of their actions not only for themselves, but also for their children. The only planet we know is Earth and that is our common home. Hence, we need to protect and conserve it for the future.
